Frequently asked questions... I have been informed that Tai Chi is a form of health exercise yet you are saying it is also a martial art, from what I have seen there is no martial content just people slowly waving their arms about. Tai Chi was once a great fighting art however, in its transmission to the west, has been diluted almost beyond recognition. The slow exercises from Tai chi are only the tip of the iceberg of the art. To the casual observer the form does appear to be "arm waving", however it is an intense internal exercise. One result of form practice, among many, is the powering of the waist muscles in order to develop the explosive power of Fajing for fighting. How long will it take for me to master Tai chi?. Tai chi is one of these mysterious arts that, the longer you practice, the more complex it becomes. Therefore you may never "master" the art within one lifetime. Even the great modern master Erle Montaigue considers himself to be a mere student as he finds himself learning new things every day. Is it possible to learn Tai Chi without a full time instructor? Yes. There are so many great books and videos (Erle Montaigue's for example) available at the moment that, with diligent application, anyone could reach a reasonable level of competence without any formal teaching at all. However to attain a high standard in any field, one must seek a qualified teacher, if only for corrections. |
